Separate the boundaries
City, township, postal, county, school-district, and attendance-area boundaries are different systems. A familiar community name does not prove district residency or assignment.
Verify the exact address
Ask the district to confirm district residency, current assigned building, grade configuration, enrollment documents, and whether any boundary process could affect the address. Recheck before a commitment and again before enrollment.
Research transportation
Confirm bus eligibility, stop rules, travel time, nonpublic or choice-school transportation, and what happens when activities end after normal routes. Test the household's fallback transportation plan.
Understand school choice
Open enrollment, community schools, nonpublic schools, career-technical programs, and other options have separate eligibility, application, capacity, cost, and transportation considerations. Verify current rules with the responsible provider.
Review growth without predicting outcomes
Read board materials, facilities plans, enrollment projections, boundary proposals, and capital plans. These reveal questions to ask; they do not guarantee a future assignment or experience.
Avoid rankings as a housing answer
A rating compresses many measures and cannot determine fit for a particular student. Review current source data, programs, student supports, accessibility, policies, and direct conversations based on the household's needs.
